SSL is short for Secure Socket Layer, and is a protocol for transmitting private data via the internet. It creates a secure connection between a client and a server, over which any amount of data can be sent securely. SSL encrypts data so that private data is known only to the recipient of data over the web. A padlock in your browser indicates you are on a secure web site (example on the right). If you want to have an online business on the web, an SSL Certificate is necessary to protect private information, such as credit card details, from being intercepted over the internet, and keep your web site and customers protected.
